Things to do in Crete
Venizelou Graves
Spiros was just one of the Cretan revolutionaries that stood here amidst a vicious bombing raid from a European fleet. Famously, after the flag pole had been shattered by gunfire and bombs, he bravely jumped into the fray and held aloft the Greek flag, using his body as a pole. Upon seeing this magnificent bravery, the European ships ceased fire.
Aside from the fantastic tale behind the Venizelou Graves, today they are one of the most peaceful and beautiful spots on the whole of Crete. Well maintained olive trees give great shade and a wonderful statue of Spiros looks out over Chania and the sea.
Chania outdoor market
The outdoor market just outside Chania main town is an absolute must! Ranging from clothes to food the produce on sale here, every Saturday, is the least interesting, though great value. It's the colourful characters that sit, stand, shout and sell their wares. Always in the midst of at least four conversations with old friends and new ones who wish to know more about the vegetables they are buying.
Definitely try to get there early, as by mid-morning in the summer months the only safe place from the sun's heat is under the large shades that cover the stalls.
